ERIC ESSIX: "LATE NIGHT DRIVE"

SPECIAL TO THE ...FEBRUARY 17,2021

0

Jazz Guitarist Eric Essix's music video release for "Late Night Drive" is from his new album "Songs From The Deep."

For Eric Essix, the year 2018 marked two inspiring milestones in his multi-faceted career. In celebration of 30 years as a solo recording artist, the Birmingham, Alabama based, contemporary jazz guitarist released “More”, his 25th full length album. It was a pivotal moment in a creative journey that has made him a genre icon – not only for his keen ability to fashion a continuous flow of infectious melodies and funky grooves, but also because of his willingness to artfully dismantle past ideas of what jazz is and reinvent them.

Fast forward to 2020. In the midst of a devastating global pandemic, social unrest and economic upheaval, it would seem like the most unlikely time for an artist to be inspired to write and record new music. However, for Eric, it has proven to be the perfect season to do just that.

Eric Essix – The Deep

In the midst of a devastating global pandemic, social unrest, and economic upheaval in 2020, veteran jazz guitarist Eric Essix produced one of the most brilliantly focused releases of his 27 album, 32 year career entitled “Songs From The Deep”.

Now, following the success of the record’s first single. “Late Night Drive”, comes a ‘summer mix’ of the title track, “The Deep”. Written, arranged, and produced by Eric, “The Deep” revisits a familiar theme that has defined the guitarist throughout his career: love for his Alabama home, the South and gospel, jazz and blues music that was born there.

“The Deep” washes over the listener like a warm, Alabama summer day with its church inspired Hammond organ, pulsating 6/8 backbeat and laid back vibe. In the spirit of Southern culture, Eric takes his time with this one while skillfully articulating the melody and leaving plenty of space to experience the song’s deliberate pace and phrasing. It is, by far, the most expressive track on the album. It is also the perfect vehicle for Eric to take the listener on a musical journey through his homeland with so much imagery and emotion, you’ll feel like you’re actually there.

Listen to The Deep on Smooth Jazz Buzz (Playlist 18/5).
